Today I want to talk about something near and dear to my heart.
As many of you probably know, I am absolutely and completely in love with Pure Barre.
It all began in late August of 2014, when a few of my girl friends (S/O Julia & Ale) convinced me to give it a go. I’m not going to lie – I was very skeptical at first. I had taken a few spin classes at my local gym, but I never really thought group exercise was my thing. I enjoy working out on my own, so I never thought workout classes would be for me.
After some mild convincing, I headed to my local studio in Athens to take my first class (on Wednesday at 4:15 with Chenault, to be exact).
My first class went by in a complete whirlwind. I don’t even know what to say about it except that it was HARD… and I loved every second. That first class was enough to convince me to take the plunge, and I purchased my first month on the spot.
14 months, and almost two 100-tuck clubs later, the love is still so real.
So, what’s the deal? Why do people love it so much?
Here’s the scoop.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with what Pure Barre is, here’s a description from their website:
In just 55 minutes you will achieve a full-body workout concentrating on the areas women struggle with the most: hips, thighs, seat, abdominals and arms. The Pure Barre technique is low-impact, protecting your joints by avoiding any bouncing or jumping. Each strength section of the workout is followed by a stretching section in order to create long, lean muscles without bulk. The technique works to defy gravity by tapering everything in and lifting it up!
During class, the instructor will guide you through a series of moves that strategically target different areas of the body. The class format remains the same, but the moves are always changing – so you never get the same workout twice! Using only two small arm weights, rubber tubing, a rubber ball, the ballet barre, and your own body weight, the instructor guides you through an intense full-body workout. The class emphasizes tiny, isometric movements, which make your muscles burn and, ultimately, shake.
And when I say shake, I mean SHAKE. 9/10 I look like a crazy person at the end of thighs because my legs are shaking so hard. I have never appreciated stretching so much in my life until taking this class.
Throughout class, the instructor demonstrates all the moves, gives vocal descriptions of how you should be positioning your body, and where you should be feeling the work. They even call you out by name when you’re doing well, and come personally adjust you when your form is off.
This ties in another thing I love about the workout – it feels so personalized.
The instructor literally encourages you by name, helps push you deeper into your stretches, and adjusts your form as you go – all so you can get the most out of your workout.
Aside from the wonders Pure Barre works for your figure, one of the things I love most about the class is the mental component. Not only does the workout make you feel confident and strong, it gives your mind an hour escape from the rest of the world.
The class is fast-paced, and emphasizes focusing in on yourself to find the connection between mind and body to really feel the burn – so you literally do not think of anything else while you’re taking a class. All your attention is devoted to your form, the move you are doing, and listening for cues for what to do next.
If you’re stressed or anxious, you feel like a whole new person when you leave. And that, to me, is worth any price tag!
It even makes waking up at 5:00am slightly more bearable 😉
So all this to say, I highly recommend this workout to any and everyone! It’s fast-paced, hard, and most importantly, fun! So go take a class – I promise you won’t regret it. 🙂
