It’s The Little Things

November 8, 2015

Hi guys!

I’m super excited about what we’re talking about today.

A few weeks ago, I read a post on Julie’s blog, Peanut Butter Fingers, that really struck a chord in me. In her post, she started up a conversation around treating yourself to the little things that make you happy.

Not only did I realize how much we have in common from reading this post, but it got me to thinking about all the little things I do on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis that bring me inordinate amounts of joy. I thought this would be a great topic, because I strongly believe these small things should be acknowledged and recognized in order to soak up all the happiness that comes with them.

In this spirit, I’ve put together a list with some things that make me so much happier than they should. Please feel free to play along in the comments below!

Making my bed

Weird, I know.

This is a habit that started sophomore year of college and has stuck ever since. There’s something about the process of making my bed in the morning that starts my day off on the right foot. If my bed goes unmade, my life feels unorganized. I could literally be laying around my apartment all day, but I still have the urge to make it.

It might be a weird personality quirk, but it’s something I genuinely enjoy doing for myself and for my space.

(Ironically, my bed is not made at the moment. My sheets are in the dryer, and my blankets, comforter, and pillows are piled in a mound on my bed.)

I’m a total bookworm. Ever since I was a little girl, snuggling up and reading a good book has always brought me inordinate amounts of joy.

Whether its curling up on the couch with a book and a cup of coffee, or unwinding at night glued to my current read – there is is nothing quite like getting lost in the pages of a good story.

Listening to podcasts on my commute

Since I’ve started working full time, I’ve developed a new appreciation for podcasts. I listened to my first podcast in January (Serial… So excited for Season 2!), and have been on a kick ever since. Starting and ending the workday by listening to a story or learning something new via my car speakers makes my day just a little bit happier.

(If you have any recommendations of podcasts to listen to – please share in the comments below!)

Burning candles

Lighting a candle while I’m reading, cleaning, or lounging around the apartment is such a tiny way to make me smile. There’s something about the warm smell and glow of a candle wick that seems so indulgent and gives me all the feels.

PS – If you’ve never purchased a Volcano candle before… DO IT. It smells like dreams and Anthropologie (which are basically the same thing).

Grocery shopping

Do I even need to explain this one? Prepping my grocery list, perusing the aisles of my favorite stores, and unloading all my goods knowing I have a week full of delicious meals ahead makes my inner type-A health nut go bananas.

Painting my nails

I absolutely love nail polish, and taking the time to paint my nails brings me so much joy. I just love looking down and seeing a little pop of color!

Going to the bookstore

Even if I don’t buy anything! Grabbing a coffee or tea from the coffee shop and perusing the shelves for books to add to my reading list gives me SO much happiness. It also makes me feel super cool and hip and mysterious…. No? Just me?

These are just a handful of the little things that bring extra light to my life. I’m going to challenge myself, and each of you, to acknowledge these things when you do them, and soak up the joy they bring you.

So, what about you guys?

Are there any little things make you so much happier than they should?

XO, Bailee

Grocery shopping makes me so happy. I love putting together my list and I can spend hours browsing the aisles. It calms me and gives me great pleasure! I know that sounds weird, but I know you understand! 🙂
