Are you a morning person, or an evening person?
This simple question can tell you a lot about a person. Maybe you’re an early bird because you like to start your day and get a workout in before everyone else is awake. Or maybe you’re a night owl because you feel the hours between 9-12 P.M. are your most productive.
I, for one, am a morning person. I love everything about it. The stillness, the morning light, breakfast food, coffee… Mornings are my time to make sure the day gets off on the right foot. This usually consists of drinking coffee, eating breakfast, and catching up on some of my favorite blogs. These are three of my favorite things, and my day is 10x better when I get to wake up, sit down, and enjoy them.
Of the three, I’d say the coffee and breakfast ritual reins supreme as the key to my morning routine. Nothing says good morning like a fresh cup of joe and a healthy, balance breakfast.
I have been on a cold brew coffee kick for the last year or so, as it’s stronger and less acidic than regular coffee (adios heartburn). I have a toddy that I use to make cold brew coffee at home on my own, but when I don’t feel like brewing my own, my go-to brand is Icebox Coffee. Icebox is a small startup out of Birmingham, Alabama who I had the pleasure of meeting at my local Whole Foods when they were sampling. Between having friendly employees, being a local business, and having an excellent product, I was hooked!
One of the many great things about cold brew is that it can be served warm or cold, so you can enjoy it in quite a number of ways. One morning while drinking a cup cold brew, I decided to whip up a smoothie and got a brilliant idea – why not put coffee IN my smoothie.
I contemplated my smoothie-making materials, brainstorming what type of flavor combination would be a winner. I decided to take a spin on the classic “chunky monkey” combo by adding in some frozen bananas, chocolate protein powder, and almond butter. I mean, coffee + chocolate… What else could you dream of?

So maybe you’re a morning person and love making yourself a good breakfast in the A.M., or maybe you’re a night owl and need something that’s quick, tasty, and caffeinated to get you through the early hours. Either way, this smoothie is for you.
Buzzed Chunky Monkey Smoothie
- 1 frozen banana
- 1 serving chocolate protein powder
- 2-3 oz Icebox New Orleans Blend Coffee Concentrate (depending on your strength preferences)
- 2 tbsp almond butter
- 1 cup milk of choice (I reccommend unsweetened vanilla almond or cashew)
- Combine all ingredients in a blender & blend until creamy
